Big investment for teachers in Wales announced

21 November 2018

The Institute of Physics welcomes the Education Secretary's announcement of the National Approach to Professional Learning (NAPL).

NAPL funding investment 2018

This announcement marks the single biggest investment in support for teachers in Wales since devolution, with £9 million funding in this financial year, increasing to £15 million next financial year.

This funding looks to give schools the time and resources they need while planning for the new curriculum and makes sure that changes are made in a way that both prioritises teacher’s wellbeing and results in improved learning.

Funding will help ensure there is cover for staff to continue their professional learning which will be available for all practitioners in schools, not just teachers.

Schools will also be encouraged to create, share and exploit learning opportunities with other schools and organisations as they work together in clusters.

IOP supports this investment in teaching in Wales. Through the Stimulating Physics Network Wales, we've worked with the Welsh Government to provide in-school CPD for teachers of physics since 2015 and have seen how effective these kinds of interventions can be. More access to flexible, high-quality support for teachers and technicians will have a huge benefit to learners in Wales.

We also believe that clusters of cooperating schools will be beneficial as the new curriculum rolls out. This is already happening with pioneer schools in Wales, but further investment into these networks will grow the culture of collaboration in Welsh education.
